I used to have seven cats. Or was it six? I do not remember. All I know now is it all went out of hand and I could not take care of them anymore. Now I am down to one and I am watching him grow. I had one just like him, his name was Chewy, short for Chewbacca. He was the first generation of offspring by Itchy and Scratchy. They are brothers and sisters, the probability of having children are a bit weird. They would either have only one normal-looking kitten or a handful that may have abnormalities like fur discolorations resembling that of Felix The Cat. Chewy was the champion. Although he did not last long in this planet.

Whenever there was something I decide to take up, I tend to get carried away. When I first got Itchy and Scratchy, I wanted to enroll in veterinary short courses, if such existed. I could see myself in nursing scrubs. I did start looking around for cheap scrubs so I would be ready to jump the gun and go. I want to be pretty sure that whatever the uniform is, it will the least of my worries.

Then I take a brief pause. I realise that I may be taking things to far and need to relax. I look over to little Booboo and see that he is not so little anymore. He has grown into a healthy tomcat and I did a good job raising him.

I have always been simple with my outfits. You can place me next to a boy and it would take as just as long to get dressed. Jeans, shirt, and sneakers (or flip flops, if allowed) are my daily casual. I would rather spend two hours (and I do too) in the shower than putting a getup together. That does not mean that I cannot and I would not. When the occasion calls for it, I do dress up. I go to weddings in a dress and pair of high heels. I am in my best suit whenever I am attending a serious function. I just cannot be bothered with it everyday. This does not also mean that I am tasteless. Put me next to a connoisseur and we are guaranteed to rock each other’s socks.

People make the hasty assumption that I am a boring dresser. To an extent it is true because I like to compartmentalise my wardrobe does not mean I am into my own kind. Even if our office allows artistic expression, there are closet staples that stay buried during weekdays. I like wearing dresses and skirts on the weekends. The flip flops stay but the jeans take a break.

I do not like following trends. I am probably the only girl I know who does not own a pair of skinny jeans. I simply do not like the cut, it seems too unflattering for me. Leggings are okay as long as they are under control which means no wild prints or loud colours. Wide leg trousers is an all-year round favorite, no matter what the season is, there is always a good pair that you can wear and be comfortable in. It does not matter to me what everyone else is wearing, as long as we are all comfortable and fabulous (we can even skip the latter if you want).

I never had the patience for shopping, especially clothes. To those who know me well, they will tell you that when the word shopping is uttered in my presence, it almost literally translates to complete culinary hedonism. Or a day in the electronics shop with the widest selection. Never in designer high streets or the like.

That is one of the reasons why I got into online shopping. Though you cannot fit the actual items, wading through the variety that is widely available to you can be a breeze. Online retailers have managed to improve their presence in the worldwide web over the years, your quality screen time can be be worthwhile, like talking to a real-life salesperson, minus the social awkwardness that some people tend to elicit.

To some newbies, online shopping tend to be stigmatised as something that is only accessible to the common people, that one has to fit into a basic size category that is easy to find. Believe it or not, whether you are on the small side of the spectrum or on the opposite, heavier end, your choices can be quite overwhelming. This is true not only for the array of size, it also applies to the type of clothing you are looking for, from your yoga tops to your seasonal wardrobe overhaul.

It is like putting the ultimate shopping experience in a box and stuck into your screen. You can even feel the refreshments served in shops when you are waiting to be fitted.

One of the most remarkable stereotypes derived from this is the nurse. Images of nurse uniforms and scrub clothing are equated to cleanliness and proper sanitation, thanks to long running medical series that have actors portray doctors and their staff quite convincingly. The power of suggestion is strong enough to make you wish that your banker or butcher shares the same uniform as them.

It was not long before scrubs went beyond the hospital walls. You would see staff from other establishments that are remotely related to the health industry wearing the same uniform. Not only does it prove to be more economical to their employers, it is also favorable to their market customers because both sides are counting on the same stereotype that will give them a sense of security when it comes to creepy crawlies that are not visible to the naked eye.

Like most parents and guardians, mine also thought that my problem was cognitive and it can be fixed by a tutor.

I struggled with linear programming. I had to take some of my math credits in uni several times because I simply did not have the patience to follow the professor in the classroom discussions. Students nowadays are lucky enough to have online resources like the probability calculator. Those who have problems with prime factorization can stop whining because online help is readily available to those who need it.

If I only had the patience to actually look into the matter, these tools were all I needed to make it through the hassles of school life.

Despite being a bit off in the head (not my words, there are just people you trust enough to be honest about what they think of you), I am quite generous. I am the type of person you can borrow money from and expect me to have faith in your own initiative to pay me back. It would take another person or a desperate need for me to come up to you for a bit of a reminder of what you owe. I have been told that I can never have a business of my own because I would end up giving everything away and make zero profit.

Lucky for me, that will never be realised and I do not have to do the dirty work myself. Thank heavens for forensic accountants, my future business partners who are still a mere figment of my imagination as we speak, will not have the chance of trying to outwit me with my money. A forensic accounting expert can eliminate crooks in all forms, shapes and sizes. This is not to be taken literally of course, we are can never be too civilised for due process. All is fair in love in war, we are all entitled to the system and forensic accountants will deliver what is right. So I can still be a hippie with my money. If you screw around, it is out of my hands.

As a child, I was the epitome of the ultimate klutz. Not a day will pass that I do not get a new cut from something as simple as turning the knob of the door to my room. It also does not help that I like playing with stuff that I am told to stay away from, like matches and firecrackers. It was not long before Burnshield became a household staple like bread. Kid toys bored me, I would rather tinker around the house for mum’s new secret stash of matches. My favorite was taking a matchstick, lighting it up and putting it back inside the box before throwing the entire thing in the air. No, I am not a pyromaniac. I just like driving mum nuts. Oh and the colours that fire creates.

Having me as a child is equivalent to having a steady set of medical supplies. First aid kits are literally in every corner of the house, both inside and outside. Mum always feared the day that I would get bored with matches and progress to something more dangerous and Jackass-y. If I knew Johnny Knoxville and Steve-o then, we would be on the telly together. Mum takes comfort in the fact that I have not built half pipes indoors. At least not yet. She is familiar with that dude named Bam Margera and she is hoping that I will never take after him.

When it was finally legal for me to move out of my folks’ place, I immediately realised my dream apartment: almost bare with just functional furniture. I have always liked the idea of living in a studio with nothing but a sofa bed that I can put away during the day. Bedroom furniture doubles as dining room furniture. Put the sofa bed away and you have a couch for dining Japanese style (or lazy as mum would put it).

As I grew older and wiser (I think), I realised the importance of having separate furniture sets to define an area in a studio. Having a proper dining table at one corner and a bed and mattress on another sets the ambiance for what you do in that area. If you have trouble sleeping, a sturdy bed with a pretty headboard and a comfortable mattress will definitely help distinguish one room from another despite the lack of walls. As you go along in life, this is further emphasized by the people you meet. Having people over for drinks or dinner can be difficult if you only have a sole sofa bed. It does defeat the hippie-bohemian in me but necessity prevails, might as well do it right.

Sometimes, fate has a way of sneaking up on us. We mingle, we date, we find the one and we decide to get hitched. We spend hours and a whole lot of dough on planning the perfect day to seal the deal and get hitched. We pick the perfect venue that we book a lifetime in advance due to the long queue, the perfect cake that cost as much as the dress, then boom, one of you gets cold feet and everything is ruined. If this happened in Charles Dickens’ time, wedding cancellation insurance is something that even his imagination has not even thought of.

Of course, cold feet is not just the only reason why weddings get called off. Wedding insurance is also a product of again, fate playing tricks on us. The groom (god forbid) can get caught in a car crash that may not even be his fault. You would have to be the antichrist to have such bad luck and lose everything in a day, from the one you love to all of your money. It is also not as chi chi as you think. There are various wedding insurance plans that are available to your budget bracket. With enough reading up on the subject, you can find the best wedding insurance plan that will provide a form of comfort in case your day takes a tragic turn.

I was at a mate’s birthday bash at a bar last Friday. I have not seen her in a long time and she said she recently started a fashion blog on a free weblog platform. I asked her why she did not just buy a domain for very little money and have her own customised address if it is available. She said she cannot be bothered with having a proper web hosting which she does not know much about. I told her it is not like she has to man servers herself, that is why there is a thing called managed hosting. Having a good core for your website is a good investment in the long run. A fashion blog as one can imagine, is heavy on images and graphics, having a good host will enable you to be sure that your website has a good back up. When your host also has colocation, it also shows how well they can deliver their service. It was not exactly an ideal time to discuss technical stuff, with the booze and the location, all I got was, ‘you lost me at yeah’. She suggested that we continue our discussion when we have sobered up.

In the end, I managed to convince her to get her own domain. She is currently busy filling it up with tons of photos of the latest trends in fashion, from tiny bits and big bits of accessories to long dresses and the latest ensembles that constitute a look, a way of wearing them from hair to makeup. She also plans to have how-to videos in it, which is another reason to get a good host. To be honest, this should be considered as a way overdue project. Such a creative person should have invaded cyberspace ages ago.
